Style Content – Monday Fun Day OOTD

Spring is here today! I don’t know for how long but it’s here today! And although it’s still a bit cool out I just had to embrace the season with my outfit today. I opted for absolutely no maternity items today – this is proving more and more difficult as time goes on, so this is me squeezing my belly into these Zara jeans one more (last?) time (seriously it’s starting to get uncomfortable).

Yes I keep wearing the same clothes over and over, that’s what you do when you are 7 months pregnant! It’s too expensive to keep buying new items. I did buy this new t-shirt from Jcrew and am loving it. I went for a size large, even though i can still fit into a size Medium, thinking that it would easier accommodate the bump in these last 10 (or so) weeks.

OOTD

Leather Jacket – Zara, hoodie – Wings & Horns (husbands), V-neck tee – J Crew, jeans – Zara (same washed out stretchy jeans I bought months ago).  I paired this with my good ‘ol black Toms. I was going to go with my Tory Burch flats but had too much running around to do and thought the slipper like shoe was probably my best bet.

Layers Layer Layers and Comfort. That’s my advice (and motto) for today.

Style Content – The Pregnancy Files

It’s hard to get inspired with clothes these days with Spring only coming at us in short teasers, but I’m trying! I refuse to buy anything new until the weather turns and i can start getting some spring/summer items. I’m still doing prenatal yoga three times a week, swimming once a week, and in the last legs of getting the house ‘ready’. I’m dying to have my weekends back – as in no painting, no furniture assembly, no reason for a 7:30am alarm on a Saturday morning! I want some quality time with my husband. We live in the same house, sleep in the same bed, spend all weekend together working on the house – and I miss him! It’s just not the same as having ‘us time’. y’know? And the amount of weekends we have left where it’s just the two of us are decreasing rapidly, so I really want to make the most of it.

Whoa tangent, back on track; Yoga/Swimming/house etc = busy me who needs outfits that can take me through all the day time errands that need doing and are still comfortable. The bump is more of a mountain these days (11ish weeks left to go) and only getting bigger, this makes for some very uncomfortable waistbands in some of my regular go-to items. This week i rediscovered my harem pants – i know they are a hit or miss style with most folks but for this on-the-go-pregnant-yogi they were a key item this week. These exact ones were from the lululemon lab, so they were made in luxtreme which is a very soft flowy fabric and felt so comfortable around the bump.

So this was me on Tuesday evening, heading off to Hypnobirthing with the Mister. I added one of my basic white maternity tshirts (from Thyme Maternity – great basics!), a scarf from lululemon (doubles as a shawl or a blanket in savasana), my husband’s sweatshirt and my good ‘ol denim jacket (levi’s).  Comfort to the max.

The next morning, for yoga – same pants but i added one of those extra long cool racerbacks I’ve told you about before.

I had to give you a profile shot so you can see the bump is growing! (this is me at 28.5 weeks). So find your one piece that gives you your mojo and work it as many ways as possible, that’s my advice this week.

Style Content – Analyzing KK

Ok so I’m the first to admit pregnancy is not all rainbows and unicorns – your body is completely out of your control from the very moment of conception (except you just don’t know it yet). And adapting to the roller coaster is a full time job, and then when your body starts to change – and rapidly at that, adapting your wardrobe and style to that is also a challenge. I can’t even begin to imagine how someone who lives (and thrives?) in the public eye and whose pre-pregnancy body was constantly under scrutiny. So kudos to Kim for really embracing her changing body and trying to maintain her personal style throughout her pregnancy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but the girl keeps trying and my hat is off to her for that.

When i first saw this photo my gut reaction was ‘What was she thinking?!’

Kim Kardashian curves-1724150But then i saw this photo from another angle and I understood her thought process, from just about any other angle it looks like a totally different dress. But let this be a lesson to us all to check all angles before heading out – and also be weary of colour blocking. Sometimes it works… sometimes it doesn’t.

Another lesson from KK – leave the peplum for when we have our waists back, and prints/shine just draw the eye so be careful where you’re drawing that eye to. Now if the black top had little more coverage (so you couldn’t see her bra through it) and it went down to her hips and the peplum was attached to the top – it’s possible this could have worked. But as it stands, I’m learning from her mistakes, and so should you.

Now this on the other hand… Why would you strategically put embroidery that increases in size, with the biggest size right over your chest? She’s already known for her curves, and if she’s anything like me her boobs started getting bigger the second she got pregnant (true story I noticed how painful my boobs were before i figured out i was four days late…). So this move is just questionable. And then adding more bulk to the mid section without actually giving you shape, I have to assume she has one of those mirrors at home that lengthens and thins. Kudos to her for putting pants on under the dress and not attempting to wear it as a dress. Points to you Kim for having that insight through those crazy pregnancy hormones.

In my books this is her biggest miss yet, I personally find exposed skin/cutouts/mesh inserts around a baby bump inappropriate, but more than that it’s just unflattering. It makes her boobs look bigger than her head (which they may very well be but why highlight them?!) and the hem slit curves up at a very unflattering point of her body, and goes a wee bit too hight for my taste. This is my biggest fashion miss of the year.

For all the risks she’s taken, and misses she’s endured, she’s had a few hits as well. White is a tricky colour when you’re growing in size but i believe this was a white party so what choice did she have? All in all I think she did pretty good! I love all the ruching and no defined waist, very slimming. The draping on the right draws the eye down and also cuts the body down in width. How she’s holding the girls up is anybody’s guess but they’re at the right height and not pouring out. And her hair and makeup? Perfection!

And on a more casual note, this was a win for me;

It’s had mixed reactions from the press and bloggers alike but I like it, in fact I’d like to borrow it. I love this type of blocking, the oversized repeat and the strategic princess seams that draw the eye in. The top ‘V’ appears to drop a little too low to offer much in the way of shape, but with a jacket on it’s hard to tell what it might look like on it’s own.

Pregnancy is hard kids, staying fashionable and pregnant – even harder. She’s got at least 2 if not 3 more months to go and I for one am anxious to see what else she attempts as she gets into what my mom so lovingly refers to as ‘the elephantitus stage’.

Style Content – Pastel Power

The forecast for last night & today was so miserable – I just refuse to let Spring think it can drag it’s butt any longer. So I did my best to pretend the warm sunny weather is on it’s way by opting for a pastel mani/pedi. I wish I had had the presence of mind to take note of the colour names – both are Essie. Obvi i went for mint green on the toes and a pretty soft coral on my hands, my sincerest apologies for not knowing exactly which colours they might be.

Pastel Power

A fresh mani/pedi will cheer any girl up – well at least it always cheers this girl up. Especially these days as I can barely manage to shave my legs, never mind paint my toes. It’s the one indulgence I’ve tried to maintain through my pregnancy – because when you look good, you feel good. And some days when the hormones are through the roof and you don’t know if you are happy or sad or coming or going – you need all the help you can get. A little pastel polish goes a long way.

Baby Content – Bee Decisions

Ok folks, those brilliant folks at Bugaboo have gone and done it again. This time they are offering limited edition Andy Warhol prints on their canopies for all stroller models. But which one to choose??? Let me know your vote!

Baby Content – The Beginnings of a Nursery

Two major additions to the nursery this weekend!

My dad somehow scored a really great rocking chair from a friend – for free! I had no idea what it looked like and saw it for the first time at Easter (where it was waiting for us at my parents’ place for us to take it home). I’m so thrilled with it, I’m putting it in the nursery and we’re putting the one Mr Content ordered for me in the family room. I tossed an ikea pillow onto it for comfort and have tucked it into the corner of the nursery by the window.

And here’s the big one – THE CRIB IS UP!!! I can hardly believe it. It still isn’t sinking in that there’s a wee one joining us in less than three months but it’s really happening! We’re thrilled with the crib, and it was relatively easy to put together (thank goodness!). It has three different heights for the mattress, converts to a toddler bed and eventually to a regular bed – the front and back turn into a head board and base board. This was a gift from my mother-in-law (Thank you Alice!) and we know it will be much loved for many years to come. No bedding yet, I’ve put it on the registry  so I will post further updates as it all comes together. Also I’m still playing with the layout of the furniture in the room, and am holding off on hanging anything on the walls until the furniture is figured out. Stay tuned for the evolution.

Style Content – OOTD Shades of Grey

OOTD shades of grey

New grey washed out jeans (maternity) from H&M ($40!), oversized black blouse  by hanni y that is a staple in my closet (I’ve had it for over a year). Oversized fuzzy grey w/ skulls scarf and of course my trusty black leather jacket both from Zara. Boots from  Fiorentini & Baker.

All that happened here was a new pair of inexpensive maternity jeans from H&M giving new life to some staples in my wardrobe. FYI I’m at 27 weeks here. We didn’t take a side profile pic but trust me there’s a large bump there. That’s why i had the big fuzzy scarf and gloves on, because there’s no way my jacket zips up.

Mrs Content – Guest Etc

I had so much fun today shooting with Jonathan from lululemon. He is the proud owner of Guest Etc and asked to feature me this week. Having worked for lululemon for 6+ years, I’m still a big fan of their clothing – which is no secret if you’ve been following my OOTD posts.

Here are some of the ‘runners up’ photos from today’s shoot;

Baby Content – Birth Photography, yay or nay?

Have you heard about Birth Photography? This seems to be a growing trend, and admittedly one I’m really fascinated with. I love photography. I love the documentation of life and events, and more importantly – moments. And isn’t birth, like any momentous event, a close series of important moments?

A number of local birth photographers have popped up on my radar lately via some of my favourite pre/post-natal resources like Bebo Mia and Toronto Yoga Mamas. Two stand-outs for me are Born by Cala Evans Photography and Four Bees Photography.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on documenting this intimate time in your life – are you for or against hiring a Birth Photographer?
